'88 GL1500 Shifter Lever

Hello there, I am a new member from Cape Coral Florida. Here is what I did. Replaced oil seal in shifter shaft on Sunday. Today was first opportunity to ride. When down shifting from 3rd to 2nd, and 2nd to 1st, it sounds like two metal surfaces are somehow grinding. Can both hear and feel the grind. What did I do wrong? Is it possible that I indexed the gear shifter arm to the spindle wrong. The picture in Clymer looks like it should be at 1 O'clock, I set it at 12 O'Clock, in neutral position.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Art

Hi art, welcome to the forum.....There are marks on the shift lever and the shift shaft that need to line up.

reindex the arm according to the manual.... if that is the only thing mechanical that has been changed that has tobe the source of your issues one would think bro.

Also, it's possible that the arm is not fully onto the shifter shaft as well...

Having the index a bit off and/or having the arm standing proud of the shaft you can run into interference issues with the headder pipe there (you rememeber how tight it was getting the arm off of the end of the shaft -- the clearances there are pretty tight.)

Clean the area up well and scribble on the shifter-shaft with a marker -- you should be able to find the small index mark -- The mark on the lever is pretty visible without looking too hard.

Is this grinding as you move to shift, then also like a vibration (similar to an engraving pen skipping) ?
