Lester wheels

Original Wings had laced spoke wheels. Then came the "Comstar" , which had problems with the rivets loosening. In 1983 the Wings received the first factory cast aluminum wheels.

I have recently seen a couple of 1975 Wings with "Lester" cast aluminum wheels.

Does anyone know if the original spoke wheels had common failures which caused the Lester wheels to be fitted?  Could it have been just to use tubeless tires?

I understand the cast wheel would likely be a stronger wheel. Just curious about how the "Lester" came about.

I purchased my first Wing in 76. Originally it had spoke wheels. If I’m recalling correctly the early wings came with 17” rears and tire selection was very limited. Lester came out with their Aluminum mag wheels that were a direct fit. Rear wheel size was reduced to 16” thus allowing a lot more choices in tire selection. The best I recall gearing remained really close in RPM vs MPH as the 16” tire was a lot taller type tire but still a motorcycle tire.

Never thought about it but at the time with the 16” tire if I’d looked I might have become a darksider.
