All Hallows Eve.

I would bet there are still some of you who remember when you were a little kid and at Halloween your mother would put on your dads or granddads old suit with the sleeves and pant legs rolled up. then take a cork and light it afire, blow it out and let it cool then make you a beard looking lower face and also smudge some around the rest of your face.  Then you would get a sturdy stick, tie a red bandanna into a pouch on the end of it and go Trick or Treating  dressed as a Ho Bo.

But those were back in the days when parents just wished you "Happy Trick or Treating as you went out the door.  You would meet your friends, discuss which house gave the best treats last year and you were off.  Homemade taffy apple givers were always the first housed to hit.  Then those who gave whole 5 cent candy bars (yes real candy bars did cost a nickle back then) and finally the houses that just gave the 2 for a penny candies.  Only the candy bars were wrapped and no one had ever heard of x-raying candy.

Yes it was a different time.  No one even has a cork around the house.  Well maybe a wine cork.  Hmmm, maybe that is where the corks we had back then came from.

Halfling

We used to have a iron top oil burning stove in the kitchen. The round iron covers came off with the use of a handle thingy and the bottom of the cover was always covered in a thick black soot. That soot was applied to many a small face in our family to help with the "Hobo Look" or darken the features for under a pillow case hood.
