Nice trip Ken.

Can't wait to retire so I can take these extended trips. 2 weeks vacation just doesn't allow enough time on the road to take a trip of that magnitude.

Ha! Get a different job, Don!

I was getting 8 weeks vacation towards the last years of my job. 9 weeks the last year!   :jumping-for-joy-smiley-emoticon

I get 6 weeks but can only manage to get 2 weeks at a time. I have stretched it to 3 weeks once.

we are aware that we will have a very short time span to see only a very few of the sights.

I am driving my car, not the bike. so we will use the car to travel to DC.

we are looking for the closet place to get to a metro station and leave the car there at the station.

anyone familiar with the SW side of DC and the metro train links?

You can catch the train (orange line) out near Fairfax VA. The tracks run up the median of I66 and the furthest west station is right at the exit. The main cross street at that exit is Rt 243. Stay right circle into the parking ramp and find a spot. We got off at the Smithsonian stop which is right on the mall. From there it is a rather short walk to the Air and space, American History, and Natural history museums. There are others not too far away also so it depends on which you want to see as to exactly where will be the best place to get off the train.

There is also the blue line which goes more southerly to Springfield, I have not been in that area. But if you are going there from Seneca Rocks I think going in on I66 is likely to be your best bet.

We found the trains to be a much better experience than we expected. Clean, efficient and inexpensive.

WMATA.com is the web site for the DC area rapid transit system.

Okay,

I am looking at Google Maps and the WMATA map.....

I don't see an easy way to figure out where to leave the car???

I need some real help in figuring out where to drive to to park the car???

I note that Fairfax is a courthouse district and there is a lot of mall parking there.

Is it safe to just leave the car in the mall on Sunday?

I can't find "Fairfax Station" either for some reason.

I went a bit more N.E. to rt 243 and looked at that exit, seems there are only two rail stops, or bus stops?

just south of US29 ??

John, when my parents made a trip to DC  They were able to park at the Pentagon on weekend days , then bus or rail into town.  But I have to say this was before 911 and so things may be much different now . My only trip to DC I was staying at Holiday Inn on the Hill and everything was close by for tour bus . Wish I had more info for you .

That is correct John, heading eastbound on 66, take the exit for 243 and keep right to the parking area, I just looked on my Streets and trips and it looks like that is exit number 62. The rail station is in the median and there are walkways to get there. There is a surface parking area but I think it had special rules, there is also a parking ramp which is where we parked. This station is the end of the rail line so it is pretty busy, we got there just after rush hour and it was not bad but I bet at the height of rush hour it would be pretty hectic.

thanks Doug,

we will be there on a Sunday morning, so hopefully it will not be overflowing and we will have space to park the car.
